Roundtable in Denmark – The journey from research to industry – challenges and opportunities for fractionation technology in the bioeconomy
This Roundtable is the 4th in a series of 6, organised in the FRACTION project to stimulate discussions and knowledge sharing for a better uptake of the bioeconomy. The upcoming Roundtable will shed light on the challenges and opportunities that may occur when taking a new technology from research to industry. The Roundtable will take place in Denmark on June the 1st at 10.00 – 15.30 CET.
A key outcome of the FRACTION project is the improved catalytic pathways of the fractionation process targeted at lignocellulosic biomasses. Researchers from CSIC in Spain have achieved to improve the efficiency of the fractionation process as the use of water and GVL-solvent is significantly reduced. This achievement makes the process relevant for industry because of the attention that companies in the bio-based industries have on resource efficiency and circularity.
However, one side of the story is the good news about process efficiency, and another side is the implementation of a new process in an industrial context. The latter may prove very difficult due to issues related to scalability of the technology, connecting with existing equipment and processing, and business economics. Here to should be added customers’ perception of bio-based products; an aspect that is often under-estimated by industry.
The Roundtable in Denmark will discuss about how to overcome challenges and exploit opportunities that appear when companies in the bio-based industries are looking for new technologies.
